  • Yourself! (you are a free and available model! Set up the timer or get into some natural light

  • Friends + Family : will usually model for free but beware that they may be self concious about how they are portrayed.

  • Paid Models: Many local studios have figure drawing classes and may be willing to give you model references.These prices may vary by city and experience.

A note on copyright: There is a myth that you must alter copyrighted images 10-30% but there is debate legally about this. Just be aware that you may not own the copyright to a reference image.

Creating Compositions

Use the Rule of Thirds but know when to break it.

The rule of thirds is a composition guideline. While there are other forms of composition, the rule of thirds generally leads to compelling and well-composed shots.

What is Rule of Thirds?

I use Canva to create compositions easily. There if a FREE version of Canva. You can also just the old faithfuls - Photoshop and Procreate, etc.
