Color Theory

Color theory is necessary to mix and understand painting. Here are some basics that are covered in this course:

  • Primary Colors: Red, Yellow, Blue

  • Secondary Colors: Orange, Green, Violet

  • Tertiary Colors: Red-Orange, Yellow-Orange, Yellow-Green, Blue-Green, Red-Violet, Blue-Violet

  • Warm/Cool Colors - Each hue can have a warm and cool tone.

Example: you can have a cool red (alizarin crimson) and a warm red (cadmium red). This balance will transform your skin tones and realism.

  • Value: The light and darkness of a hue.

  • Saturation: The intention or chroma of a color. You can alter the saturation of a hue or desaturate it by adding it's complimentary color or a tint (white) or shade (black)

Quick Tips:

"My tone is too orange" - add it's complimentary (blue or green)

"My tone is too blue" - add it's complimentary (red or orange)

Color will CHANGE based on the color is it NEXT TO. This will blow your mind. You may mix a color that exactly matches your reference photo but on your canvas it may appear totally "off". This could be because the color next to it is altering how you see this color. Roll with it, baby. This too shall pass. Just keep pushing through. The video explains it all!
